DEATH AT KINGSTON PENITENTIARY
KINGSTON, ON, April 11 2005 - Steven Roy Beirnes, a 41 year old offender serving a life sentence for first degree murder, died of a suspected suicide at Kingston Penitentiary on the afternoon of April 9, 2005. He was sentenced in Calgary Alberta in November 1994.
Mr. Beirnes was transferred to Kingston Penitentiary from Warkworth Institution on August 6, 2004.
The death is being investigated by the OPP Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad. Correctional Service Canada will be conducting an internal investigation. A coroner's inquest will be convened at a later date.
