FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KINGSTON, ON, May 13, 2005 - At approximately 1935 hours on May 12, 2005, an inmate was stabbed at Joyceville Institution. He was immediately transported by ambulance to Kingston General Hospital Emergency Department for treatment and remains at the hospital in serious but stable condition. The incident occurred in the recreation corridor during movement for evening recreation. The Institution is locked down to facilitate a search for weapons and contraband.

The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad was immediately contacted and is currently investigating the incident. The Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The Institution will be closed for visits and other activities until further notice.
