FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KINGSTON, ON, October 21, 2005 - On October 20, 2005 at approximately 14:30 a staff member was assaulted by an inmate who had requested to speak at the range barrier. The staff member walked to the barrier and was assaulted when the inmate pushed a broom handle at her. This assault was unprovoked and unexpected.

The staff member reported the incident to security staff, who quickly intervened. The inmate was directed by officers to surrender the weapon and he complied. He was immediately escorted to segregation.

The staff member suffered minor physical injuries and was provided medical attention on site and is currently off duty.

Kingston Police attended the institution to investigate this incident.

In accordance with CSC policies an investigation will be conducted into this incident.
