LOCKDOWN AT COLLINS BAY INSTITUTION

BATH, ON, February 6, 2006 - On February 5, 2006 at approximately 1900 hours, as offenders were returning from the recreation area an assault on correctional officers took place. An offender handed his parka to a correctional officer to be searched, and immediately punched the officer in the head. This assault was unprovoked and unexpected.

Correctional officers in the area attempted to intervene and were assaulted. There were three inmates that have been identified as primary assailants. Staff deployed chemical agent in the area of the assault, and a warning shot was fired from the 9mm rifle and staff gained control of the situation. Two inmates were placed in the segregation unit immediately; a third inmate was segregated in the unit and has been moved to segregation.

Four correctional officers sustained injuries; one officer sustained a broken wrist, a perforated ear drum and a possible concussion, the second officer sustained swelling and bruising to the facial area, the third officer sustained bruising and abrasions to the head, and the fourth officer sustained pulled muscles in the back. Two staff members are recovering from their injuries and have not yet returned to work.

The OPP Pen Squad will be attending the institution to investigate this incident.

The safety of our staff is paramount and CSC is committed to ensuring the safety and security of its staff.

In accordance with CSC policies an investigation will be conducted into this incident.
