KINGSTON, ON, March 24, 2006 - The exceptional search for weapons at Joyceville Institution was completed yesterday afternoon, March 23, at 15:00 hrs. Recreation was held last night without incident. Normal daily routine will resume at 08:00 today.
A total of 31 homemade weapons, 30 litres of brew and two ounces of marijuana were seized by staff during this search. Approximately 30 per cent of the weapons seized were sharpened butter knives, the remainder a variety of metal objects sharpened to form a puncture type weapon.
This search included a thorough review of every area of the facility. Information gathered as a result of the findings was used to enhance existing security and control practices and procedures to control the movement of contraband within the facility.
This exceptional search was a proactive measure implemented to maintain a safe work environment for staff, and a safe living environment for offenders. No staff member or offender was injured leading up to, or during the course of this exceptional search.
The Warden is reviewing all relevant information obtained as a result of the search, and will take necessary steps to enhance the safety and security of the institution. The institution remains quiet and secure.
