CONTRABAND AT JOYCEVILLE INSTITUTION

KINGSTON, ON, April 23, 2006 - On April 23, 2006 staff intercepted a package of drugs from an inmate. During a visit between an inmate and visitor, staff had reason to believe that drugs had been passed to the inmate in the visiting area. This belief was consistent with intelligence information and staff observation. Following the visit, the inmate was detained in segregation under observation, and subsequently turned over a package that was carried internally.

This package contained 59.6 grams of cocaine which has an estimated institutional value of $29,800.

Police attended the institution, and charges against the inmate are pending.

CSC has a zero-tolerance policy on drugs in federal institutions. It is through the professionalism of staff and the cooperation of police officials that the prevention of the entry of drugs into our institutions is possible.
