PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION AT MILLHAVEN INSTITUTION

BATH, ON, May 8, 2006 - On May 5, 2006 at approximately 2215 hours, offenders in Millhaven Assessment unit refused to leave the recreation area and return to their cells for the evening. The correctional supervisor met with the inmates to hear their concerns and after a brief discussion the inmates returned to the living units without further incident. The inmate's advised they were protesting the lack of shower time on the ranges and the lack of recreation time.

On May 6, 2006 at approximately 2200 hours, offenders in Millhaven Assessment unit tied the barriers in the recreation area open and again refused to leave the recreation. The correctional supervisor met with the inmates to hear their concerns and to negotiate their return to the living units. The inmates remained in the recreation area during the night, participating in a peaceful demonstration. There were approximately 100 inmates that returned in small groups during the night, the remaining 103 inmates cleared the recreation area by 1000 hours on May 7, 2006. The inmates advised they wanted increased shower and range activity time, and were protesting search and inmate movement procedures. There are no reported injuries to staff or inmates.

The institution is currently on a normal routine. Visiting hours will operate as usual.

The Correctional Service of Canada is committed to ensuring the safety and security of its staff and inmates. In accordance with CSC policies an investigation will be conducted into this incident.
