FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FLOODING AT WARKWORTH INSTITUTION

CAMPBELLFORD, ON, July 21, 2006 - On Tuesday, July 18, 2006 a water main erupted flooding an inmate living unit causing significant damage at Warkworth Institution. The living unit has been evacuated with temporary accommodation being set up in the gymnasium for approximately 100 inmates. The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has requested assistance from the military to provide cots and lockers.

An investigation is currently underway and Public Works and Government Services is assessing the extent of damages.

There were no reported injuries to staff or inmates and there is currently no disruption to normal routine.

CSC is confident that all measures taken regarding this incident will ensure the safety of the public, staff and inmates.

Warkworth Institution is a medium-security federal correctional facility housing 574 inmates.
