FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KINGSTON, ON, July 26, 2006 - The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad was called to Kingston Penitentiary on Tuesday July 25, 2006 in response to an assault on an inmate in the exercise yard at 3:30 PM.

The inmate suffered trauma to his head and upper body and he remains in the Kingston General Hospital where he was transported for treatment. The extent of his injuries has not yet been determined, however he is in stable condition.

This incident was followed by a disturbance on one institutional range and additional prison staff were called in to assist in bringing the situation under control by 9:00 PM.

The institution remains locked down as the investigation continues. D/C Norval Morley (Pen Squad) is lead investigator. The Correctional Service of Canada will also be investigating this incident.
