FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KINGSTON, ON, July 28, 2006 - On July 27, 2006 at approximately 2 pm, two correctional officers performing routine duties at a movement control post were assaulted by an inmate being processed for a visit. The inmate aggressor, acting alone, confronted the officers while being asked to provide institutional identification as per normal protocol, and struck one of the officers in the face and chest. Staff acted quickly, restrained the inmate and removed him to segregation.
One officer sustained injuries to facial bones and lost two teeth as a result of the initial attack, and a second officer sustained scrapes and abrasions while restraining the offender. Both officers are undergoing a medical assessment.
The incident was an isolated event involving one inmate. The institution is presently operating as normal.
The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is investigating the incident in accordance with CSC policy. CSC will also be conducting an investigation into this incident.
