BATH, ON, July 31, 2006 - On July 29, 2006 at approximately 2 pm, offenders in unit J were in the recreation area when two separate assaults occurred.
Correctional officers in the area began verbal intervention, however inmates did not respond, and subsequently staff issued four warning shots to control the situation. The two assaulted inmates were taken to the institutional hospital for treatment. One of the inmates incurred stab wounds and was taken by ambulance to Kingston General Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. The second inmate was treated at the institutional hospital and then placed in segregation for his own protection.
Three inmates were identified by staff as aggressors in the assaults and have been placed in segregation. The recreation area was later cleared of all inmates without further incident. Unit J is currently on a modified routine while these incidents continue to be investigated.
CSC is committed to ensuring the safety and security of its staff and inmates. There were no injuries to staff during the incident.
The OPP Pen Squad will be attending the institution to continue to investigate. In accordance with CSC policies an investigation by CSC will also be conducted into this incident.
