DISTURBANCE AT MILLHAVEN ASSESSMENT UNIT

BATH, ON, November 30, 2006 - Yesterday at 10:30 p.m., approximately 190 offenders at the Millhaven Assessment Unit refused to return to their ranges from the recreation yard despite staff issuing several orders.

During the course of the incident, there were four inmate fights which resulted in four offenders having sustained a variety of minor injuries. One inmate was treated at Kingston General Hospital and returned to the institution. In response to potential escalations, and to ensure control over the incident, staff fired four warning shots at various times during the night. There were no injuries to staff.

At approximately 5:00 a.m. this morning, the inmates began returning to their ranges.

The safety and security of our institutions is of paramount importance to the Correctional Service of Canada. An investigation into the refusal to return from the yard has been initiated and the assessment unit remains on a modified routine. Visits for the assessment unit have been cancelled for today.

Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is undergoing a parallel investigation.
