KINGSTON, ON, June 11, 2007 - At approximately 17:55 hrs on June 11, 2007, two inmates at Joyceville Institution were assaulted in the recreation area. One inmate, who was identified and controlled in the recreation area by staff, received blows to the head and neck. This offender was searched and was carrying a homemade sharpened weapon on his person. He was subsequently assessed by health care staff and segregated under observation at the institution.
A second offender was observed by staff returning from recreation to the unit. It was determined this offender had been assaulted, having obvious swelling and abrasions to his face. This offender was also assessed by medical staff, and remains segregated at the institution.
The institution remains locked down and quiet at this time.
The Warden has ordered an exceptional search of the entire facility for weapons and brew based on the circumstances of this incident.
Due to immediate staff intervention the incident was controlled and the institution remains quiet and secure at this time.
Visits are closed until further notice. Visitors are asked to call ahead to determine the status of visiting before traveling to the site.
The safety and security of our institution is our primary concern. The institution will remain closed until the exceptional search is completed, and the Warden is confident it is safe to re-open the facility.
