Bath, ON, August 7, 2007 - On Monday August 6, 2007 at approximately 1955 hours an altercation involving two maximum security unit inmates occurred in the main recreation yard at Millhaven Institution. The inmates stopped fighting after several direct orders and three warning shots were fired. The victim received non life threatening injuries and both the victim and aggressor have been placed in segregation. All of the inmates were returned to their cells. Some of the 120 inmates then proceeded to block the windows, set fires and flood the ranges of the unit.
The situation has been resolved through negotiations with the inmate committee and with the assistance of correctional staff during the course of the evening and into today. The maximum security unit is currently on a modified Institutional routine. It is anticipated that Millhaven will return to regular routine Wednesday.
Correctional Service of Canada is continuing to investigate the incident.
