FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DEATH AT GRAND VALLEY INSTITUTION FOR WOMEN
KITCHENER, ON, October 19, 2007 - An inmate incarcerated at Grand Valley Institution for Women died of an apparent suicide on October 19, 2007.
Ashley Smith, a 19 year old offender was pronounced dead at 8:10 a.m. She was serving 6 years 1 month 17 days for various offences. Her sentence commenced as a young offender, on October 17, 2003. Her warrant expiry date was December 12, 2009.
Next-of-kin have been notified.
The police are investigating and an internal investigation will be convened as well. A coroner's inquest will be convened at a later date.
