BATH, ON, October 22, 2007- On Friday October 19, 2007 at approximately 1850 hours a physical altercation involving two inmates from the maximum security unit occurred in the main recreation yard at Millhaven Institution. This incident then escalated as other inmates became involved. Two victims of the assault as well as one of the aggressors were taken to outside hospital for the treatment of non-life threatening injuries. On Saturday, two of these inmates were transferred to Kingston Penitentiary (Regional Hospital Facility) for observation, while the other inmate was returned to Millhaven Institution and placed in segregation.

All inmates in the gymnasium and the recreation yard at the time of the incident were searched prior to returning to their unit. The maximum security unit was on a modified Institutional routine during the weekend and this will continue until further notice. This incident has not affected the pre-scheduled visits to the institution by members of the public.

The safety and security of our institutions is paramount importance to the Correctional Service of Canada. Both the Correctional Service and the Joint Forces Police/Corrections Investigation Unit - Penitentiary Squad are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.
