FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KINGSTON, ON, January 28, 2008 - Joyceville Institution has been locked down and an exceptional search for weapons and brew-like substances has been ordered by the Warden, following a series of unrelated incidents over the past several days. During the past week, staff has made four seizures of brew and, during this past weekend, there were two inmate altercations where weapons were used. One of the altercations resulted in serious injury to an inmate.
On Sunday, January 27, 2008, following a physical altercation, one inmate was transported by ambulance to an outside hospital for treatment of stab wounds. The inmate currently remains at outside hospital. No other inmates or staff incurred injuries from this incident.
The OPP Penitentiary Squad has been contacted and is investigating the stabbing incident.
Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances leading to these incidents. The institution remains locked down although the normal inmate visiting routine is still in effect.
The facility will reopen once institutional management determines that it is safe to do so.
Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
