FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT JOYCEVILLE INSTITUTION

JOYCEVILLE, ON, April 28, 2008 - On Sunday, April 27, 2008 at approximately 5:30 p.m., an inmate was assaulted at Joyceville Institution. The injured inmate was escorted to outside hospital for assessment and later returned. Injuries sustained are not life threatening.

Institutional operations were carefully monitored this morning and the institution will be on a modified routine for the next two days. Inmate visiting has been unaffected.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding this incident and take action where necessary.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
