KINGSTON, ON, June 5, 2008 - On Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at approximately 7:10 pm, an inmate was assaulted by other inmates in the gymnasium at Collins Bay Institution. The injuries sustained are considered serious, but he is presently in stable condition at outside hospital.
An Institutional lock down has been ordered by the Warden as a result of the incident and a search has begun for possible weapons involved.
The police were notified and attended the Institution to investigate the situation. The investigation is on going.
Visits to the Institution have been cancelled for today. Anyone planning on visiting the Institution should call in advance to ensure the visiting area is open.
In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada will continue to work with the police in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.
Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
