CONTRABAND AT KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

KINGSTON, ON, June 25, 2008 - On Saturday June 21st, 2008 the 68-year-old mother of a Kingston Penitentiary inmate was arrested upon leaving her home in Thorold Ontario, destined to visit her son who is serving a life sentence at Kingston Penitentiary. This arrest came about following a joint investigation between the Correctional Service of Canada and the Niagara Regional Police Service.

The Thorold woman was found to have 26 grams of cocaine and 25.5 grams of marijuana, concealed in her wig. The institutional value of the drugs seized is estimated at $15,500.

The Correctional Service of Canada initiated the investigation following information received that identified the woman as having agreed to supply her son with a controlled substance while he was incarcerated at Kingston Penitentiary.

CSC has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as searches of offenders and visitors, ion scanners, drug dogs, searches of buildings and cells and retrieval of information from various sources that are believed to be reliable.
