ASSAULT ON STAFF KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

KINGSTON, ON, June 27, 2008 - On Thursday, June 26, 2008, at approximately 22:00 hours, two correctional officers were assaulted by an inmate who was refusing to lock up for the night.

The inmate was subdued when other staff members responded to assist. The two correctional officers were treated for minor injuries at the institutional health care department.

The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is continuing to investigate and charges are pending against the inmate.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada will continue to work with the police in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
