KINGSTON, ON, July 14 2008 - On Sunday, July 13, 2008, Dwight Maxwell, an inmate from the Regional Treatment Centre, Ontario (RTC (O)), died of apparent natural causes while in custody. Mr. Maxwell was a patient at the Kingston Institution Regional Hospital at the time of death. His family has been notified.
Mr. Maxwell was 65 years old and serving a life sentence for second degree murder.
As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner are called in to investigate. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Regional Treatment Centre is located within the walls of Kingston Penitentiary, in the City of Kingston, Frontenac County.
The RTC (O) is a multi-level 149 bed, Mental Health Facility.
