FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT COLLINS BAY INSTITUTION

KINGSTON, ON, July 21, 2008 - On Sunday July 20, 2008 at approximately 10:30 hours an inmate was assaulted on a living unit by a group of inmates. The inmate received a number of stab wounds. He was subsequently transferred to outside hospital by ambulance for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

The institution is on a modified routine in order to facilitate a search of the living unit while ensuring the continued safety and security of the public, staff and inmates.

Members of the public attending the institution for visits are asked to contact the institution first.

The Correctional Service of Canada and the Joint Forces Police / Corrections Investigation Unit - Penitentiary Squad are conducting investigations into this incident. Criminal charges are pending.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
