FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCKDOWN AT MILLHAVEN INSTITUTION

BATH, ON, August 6, 2008 - On Tuesday August 5, 2008 at approximately 20:30, the inmates from the Maximum Security Unit in the recreation area refused to return to their unit. They have been out in the exercise yard and the gymnasium all night and the institutional Emergency Response Team is on site. Early indication is that the rationale for this inmate action is the increased drug interdiction efforts of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), such as searches, use of drug detector dogs and ion scanners. The institution has been placed in a lockdown. At this time, there have been no major injuries reported of either staff or inmates.

All visits have been cancelled until further notice.

Ensuring the safety and security of our institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
