FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ATTEMPT ESCAPE AT KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

KINGSTON, ON, August 15, 2008 - At approximately 1330 hours on August 15, 2008, two inmates incarcerated at Kingston Penitentiary attempted to escape from the institution. Immediate staff response prevented the escape.

Members of the Kingston Police Force responded to Kingston Penitentiary to work with CSC staff members to ensure that the perimeter of the institution was secure.

All inmates have been accounted for and the institution is currently locked down to facilitate a search and ensure its continued security and safety.

Visits to Kingston Penitentiary have been suspended.

The Combined Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is conducting a police investigation and the Correctional Service of Canada will be investigating this incident.

At no time was the safety or security of the public at risk.
