FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCKDOWN AT KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

KINGSTON, (Ontario), January 28, 2009 - On Tuesday January 27, 2009 Correctional Officers discovered 4 homemade weapons on a range. The Warden subsequently determined that an exceptional search of the institution was required and inmates were placed under lockdowns status. The lockdown has been put in place in order to facilitate a search of the facility to ensure the continued safety and security of the public, staff and inmates. There have been no injuries to staff or offenders thus far.

The facility will reopen once institutional management determines that it is safe to do so.
