Bath, ON, April 6, 2009 - On Saturday April 4th, 2009 approximately 60 inmates from three ranges of the Maximum Security Unit at Millhaven Institution refused to return to their cells. They remained in the recreation yard as a demonstration against recent administrative decisions. Negotiations with members of the Inmate Committee continued and inmates finally agreed to return to their cells at approximately 6:00 p.m. Sunday April 5th.
Modifications to the routine were implemented for those inmates involved in the protest. A return to normal routine is expected Tuesday. There were no injuries to staff or inmates as a result of this demonstration.
The safety and security of our institutions is of paramount importance. Correctional Service of Canada continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.
