DISTURBANCE ENDS AT MILLHAVEN INSTITUTION

BATH, ON May 21st, 2009 – A resolution was reached to end the disturbance at Millhaven Institution. On Wednesday May 20th, 2009 at approximately 7:30 pm, inmates from the Maximum Security Unit at Millhaven Institution refused to return from the exercise yard. Negotiations with the inmates continued throughout the night. At approximately 11:55am today, inmates began returning to their cells, two at a time. One inmate remains in outside hospital where he is being treated for non life threatening injuries. There are no other reported injuries to staff or inmates.

The ranges involved in this disturbance will be placed on a modified routine while the remainder of the institution will return to a regular routine. All visits were suspended for today. With the exception of those inmates involved in the disturbance, regular visits will resume tomorrow. Visitors are advised to contact the institution in advance of attending.

The OPP Pen Squad and Correctional Service of Canada are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The safety and security of our institutions, staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
