DISTURBANCE AT MILLHAVEN INSTITUTION

BATH, ON – On Wednesday May 20th, 2009 at approximately 7:30 pm, inmates from the Maximum Security Unit refused to return to their cells from the recreation area of Millhaven Institution. Over the course of the evening 48 inmates remained in the exercise yard. Some inmates attempted to gain access to a smaller yard and gymnasium, however, staff fired several warning shots and OC spray to contain the situation. One inmate sustained non life threatening injuries and was taken to outside hospital. Staff monitored the situation closely, and at this time there have been no other reported injuries to staff or inmates. Negotiations continued throughout the night.

The OPP Pen Squad has been contacted. The remainder of the Institution continues to be secure.

The institution is currently on modified routine. Visitors are advised to call the institution in advance of attending.

Ensuring the safety and security of our institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
