FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Gravenhurst, ON, May 29, 2009 – On Monday May 25th at approximately 9.30 p.m. staff members intercepted an offender who was leaving the federal reserve of Beaver Creek Institution. He was returned to custody without incident and placed in segregation. The OPP were contacted and are investigating. Offenders who are placed at minimum security institution are assessed as having a low risk to public safety.
It was believed that the offender was en-route to retrieve tobacco, a subsequent search by staff members retrieved a large quantity of tobacco and smoking related paraphernalia on the periphery of the Institution.
Tobacco has been an unauthorized item within Federal Correctional Facilities since 2008.
Preventing drugs and tobacco products from entering our Institutions is an ongoing challenge; however, it is the diligent work of our staff that help us tackle this challenge.
