FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ESCAPE AND APPREHENSION OF OFFENDER FROM PITTSBURGH INSTITUTION

Kingston, ON, June 25, 2009 – On Thursday June 25th at approximately 12:45 a.m., Stephen John Sinclair was discovered missing from Pittsburgh Institution, a minimum security federal institution. He was present for the 10:30 p.m. formal count on Wednesday June 24th, however, was noticed missing during a 12:45 a.m. patrol. Staff members at Pittsburgh searched the grounds, but were unable to locate the offender. The police were notified immediately.

At approximately 7:00 a.m. a staff member driving along Highway 15 noticed a suspicious looking person walking along the side of the road. The staff member advised the institution and two Correctional Officers went to investigate. At approximately 7:20 a.m., the staff confirmed the identity of the missing offender, apprehended him and contacted the police. The police arrived at the scene shortly thereafter, arrested the offender and brought him into custody.

Stephen Sinclair is serving an indeterminate sentence from 1966 for Non-Capital Murder.

The safety of the public is the Correctional Service of Canada’s (CSC) primary consideration. If an offender escapes, CSC works closely with police in an effort to recapture the offender as quickly as possible. Thanks to the diligence of our staff, the offender was apprehended quickly, and without incident.

CSC is investigating the circumstances surrounding this escape.
