ASSAULT ON STAFF AT KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

Kingston, Ontario – June 29, 2009. At approximately 2:15 PM on June 28, 2009, an inmate assaulted two officers who were monitoring movement to recreation at Kingston Penitentiary.

The inmate became aggressive when advised by the officers that he was late for movement. Three officers restrained the inmate who produced a homemade weapon during the altercation. One officer received minor lacerations to his leg and was treated and released from Kingston General Hospital. A second officer received abrasions during the incident.

The incident appears to be isolated and spontaneous in nature. The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is investigating and charges against the inmate are pending. In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada will continue to work with the police in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.

The institution currently remains locked down and quiet while an exceptional search for weapons is being conducted.

All inmate visiting has been suspended pending completion of the search. Scheduled inmate visitors are asked to confirm their visits before attending the institution.
