DRUG CONFISCATION AT WARKWORTH INSTITUTION

CAMPBELLFORD, ON – July 8, 2009 – As a result of an investigation by the Security Intelligence Office, staff at Warkworth Institution intercepted a package that was delivered to the Institution on June 30, 2009. The package contained two paint cans and five sets of plastic gardening tools. Upon further investigation, one paint can contained 15 wrapped packages and the other paint can contained 21 wrapped packages. While CSC officials believe that the seized packages contain a quantity of tobacco and drugs, the exact quantities are not yet confirmed. The total weight of the two packages totals 2,124.1 grams.

The Correctional Service of Canada and Northumberland OPP investigation is ongoing.

On July 4, 2009 staff intercepted a visitor attempting to smuggle drugs through the Visits & Correspondence area. The packages seized contained 9.2 grams of tobacco and 5.6 grams of what is believed to be cocaine. The total estimated institutional value of the cocaine and tobacco is $2,800.00.

The Northumberland OPP have laid charges of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking against the inmate and visitor.

CSC works closely with local police agencies and communities to stop drugs from entering its institutions.
