Gravenhurst, Ontario, July 15, 2009 – On Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at around 3 p.m., an inmate approached staff to advise that he had been assaulted by another inmate. After being provided with first aid and interviewed by correctional officers, the inmate was taken to outside hospital by ambulance. The inmate was treated for injuries to his face and later returned to the institution. He was placed in segregation upon his return.
The other inmate identified as the assailant was also placed in segregation.
Police were notified and arrived at the institution to interview the inmates.
An internal investigation into this matter will be conducted. CSC examines each incident of violence in order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents.
Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of Fenbrook Institution and the federal correctional system.
