Cambellford, ON, July 22, 2009 - The disturbance that began at approximately 2100 hours on July 21, 2009, has now ended.
Currently, there are 13 inmates at outside hospital, nine with suspected drug overdoses and four with unrelated medical conditions. One inmate death has occurred. It is suspected, but not confirmed, that the death is the result of an overdose. The name of the inmate will be released once next of kin have been informed.
The remaining inmates have been secured in their cells. The institution will remain on lockdown until the Institutional Management Team is assured it is safe to return to normal routine.
The Correctional Service of Canada will be conducting an internal investigation to determine the cause of the incident, including the death in custody.
Ensuring the safety and security of our institutions, staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the Correctional Service of Canada.
Warkworth Institution is a medium-security institution which currently houses 568 male offenders.
