FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE DEATH, WARKWORTH INSTITUTION

CAMPBELLFORD, ON – August 26, 2009 – At approximately 2:00 a.m. on August 26, 2009, staff conducting a routine range walk discovered an inmate in his cell who appeared to have attempted suicide. Correctional staff immediately initiated CPR including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator. Paramedics arrived on scene and the inmate was transported to outside hospital. The inmate was pronounced dead at approximately 2:50 am.

Offender Gregory KUIPERS was serving a 3 year sentence for Robbery. His sentence commenced January 9, 2007.

In all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner are called in to investigate. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
