FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT WARKWORTH INSTITUTION

Campbellford, Ontario, October 13, 2009 - At Warkworth Institution, at approximately 12:30 pm, staff conducting a routine range walk discovered an inmate in his cell who appeared to have attempted suicide. Correctional and healthcare staff immediately initiated First Aid/CPR, which continued until paramedics arrived on scene. Attempts to revive the inmate were unsuccessful. The inmate was pronounced dead on October 13th at approximately 2:15 pm.

Once next of kin are notified the offender's name will be released.

In all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner are called in to investigate. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.
