FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH OF AN OFFENDER AT KINGSTON REGIONAL TREATMENT CENTER

Kingston, Ontario, October 23, 2009 - On October 23, 2009, Basil MADDEN, an inmate residing at the Kingston Regional Treatment Centre, died of natural causes while under care at the Kingston Penitentiary Regional Hospital.

Madden was 62 years old and was serving an Indeterminate Sentence as a Dangerous Offender, beginning February 26, 1996 for convictions of Sexual Assault, Assault, Forcible Confinement, and Utter Threats to Cause Death/Harm.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been called to investigate. Correctional Service Canada will also review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
