Inmate Protest and Assault at Millhaven Institution

Bath, ON, October 31, 2009 – On Friday, October 30, 2009 at approximately 7:45 p.m., a group of inmates at Millhaven Institution refused to return from the recreation yard. The protest was contained to the yard and gym area. Approximately one hour into the protest a fight ensued between two inmates. Staff quickly intervened firing warning shots and deploying chemical agents. Negotiations continued and at approximately 1:00 a.m. the protest ended when the inmates were returned to their cells. One inmate was treated on site for minor injuries. Inmates involved are on a modified routine, while the rest of Millhaven Institution remains unaffected and is operating on a regular routine.

The OPP Pen Squad was contacted and is investigating the incident.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
