FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kingston, Ontario, November 9, 2009 – On Saturday, November 7, 2009 at approximately 8:00 a.m., staff at Collins Bay Institution removed an inmate from his private family visit and searched him as they believed that his visitor attempted to introduce contraband to the institution. Fifteen grams of heroin, 7 grams of crack cocaine and 41 grams of marijuana were found concealed in the inmate’s belongings. He was placed in segregation and his visitor was detained. The estimated institutional value of the drugs is approximately $15,000.00. Police have charged the visitor with drug trafficking and charges for the inmate are pending.
Preventing drugs from entering our institutions is an ongoing challenge. The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as ion scanners, drug dogs, searches of offenders, visitors, buildings and cells.
CSC wishes to remind visitors to the institution that there is a toll-free National Drug Tip Line, 1-866-780-3784, for reporting any pressure to which a visitor may be subjected by other visitors, and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loan sharking. Such information is treated with confidentiality, and a security intelligence officer will provide follow-up.
