FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DRUG INTERCEPTION AT KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

Kingston, Ontario, December 3, 2009: During the week of November 23rd, Kingston Penitentiary seized drugs destined to be introduced into the institution, involving five separate and unrelated incidents. Five inmates had concealed drugs on their person and were contained until staff members were able to recover the contraband. Joyceville Institution provided assistance with one inmate and retrieved packages of drugs at their site. The contraband consisted of tobacco, hash, marijuana, morphine pills, metabolic steroids and medication with an institutional value of more than $11,000.

All information and evidence was turned over to police for potential charges.

The Correctional Service of Canada has a zero tolerance for drugs and contraband in our institutions. This is a prime example of our staff working together to enhance the safety of our institutions.
