Campbellford, Ontario, December 30, 2009 – On December 29, 2009 at 9:33 p.m., an inmate approached staff and it was discovered that he had been assaulted by another inmate. The Correctional Officers immediately applied first aid and the inmate was taken to outside hospital by ambulance. He was treated for injuries and returned to the institution the same night. Upon return, he was placed in Segregation. Police have been notified. No instigator has been identified at this time. An internal investigation into this matter will be conducted. The Correctional Service of Canada examines each incident of violence in order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents.
In the interest of the safety and security of the Institution, the Acting Warden placed Warkworth Institution on lockdown and ordered an exceptional search of the unit involved. The search is for items that may jeopardize the safety and security of the institution. Visits have been suspended, but will resume December 31.
Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
