FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCKDOWN –JOYCEVILLE INSTITUTION

Joyceville, Ontario, January 4, 2010 – Following an assault on an inmate in the recreation area on the evening of Saturday, January 2, 2010 and in the interest of the safety and security of the institution, the Warden has placed Joyceville Institution on lockdown and ordered an exceptional search for weapons and other contraband items.The assaulted inmate was taken to outside hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and was returned to the institution the same evening.

Searching of the institution is ongoing and normal institutional operations and visits are suspended until the conclusion of the search.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
