FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Gravenhurst, Ontario, January 12, 2010 – At approximately 8:15 a.m., Beaver Creek Institution staff observed an institutional vehicle departing the prison grounds, which was believed to have been driven by an offender.
An emergency count was conducted and it was determined that inmate Robert SAUNDERS could not be found. Police were immediately notified.
SAUNDERS was taken back into custody at 10:10 a.m. by the Ontario Pronvicial Police in the Hamilton region.
SAUNDERS is serving an 15 year sentence for Attempted Murder, Arson, and Aggravated Assault. His sentence began February 5, 2002. His day parole eligibility date was August 5, 2006 and his full parole eligibility date was February 5, 2007.
Beaver Creek Institution is a minimum security facility. It is located adjacent to Fenbrook Institution in the District of Muskoka. Only those offenders who are assessed as having a low risk to public safety are placed in a minimum security institution.
As in all escapes, CSC will be conducting an investigation into the circumstances of this incident.
