FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OFFENDER DEATH – JOYCEVILLE INSTITUTION

Joyceville, Ontario, January 12, 2010 – At approximately 11:23 p.m. on Monday, January 11, 2010 offender Jason POFFLEY was found unconscious in his cell by Correctional Officers at Joyceville Institution. Staff responded immediately and initiated CPR. Attempts to revive the offender were unsuccessful, and he was taken to outside hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12: 29 a.m.

Poffley was serving a two-year sentence for several counts of Break and Enter and Fail to Comply with Probation Order. His sentence began June 02, 2009 and was to expire June 01, 2011.

The offender’s next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been called to investigate. Correctional Service Canada will also review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
