ASSAULT ON STAFF MEMBER - KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

Kingston, Ontario, January 18, 2010 - At approximately 10:40 hrs on January 18, 2010 an inmate assaulted a guidance counselor who is an employee in the institutional school. At the time of the assault, the area was being cleared of inmates by correctional officers, who responded immediately. OC spray and physical handling were used to control the aggressive offender.

The staff member who was assaulted suffered minor injuries, including scrapes to the left side of his head and ear, as well as scrapes and swelling of his elbow. Institutional health care professionals assessed the staff member's injuries immediately and referred him to outside hospital for further assessment.

The inmate remains at Kingston Penitentiary in the segregation unit.

With the exception of the school area, the Institution remains open and visiting is scheduled as per normal. An assessment will be made prior to reopening the school area.

The incident appears to be isolated and spontaneous in nature. The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad is investigating and charges against the inmate are pending.

This is one more example of our staff taking immediate action to control a volatile situation.
