DRUG SEIZURE - FENBROOK INSTITUTION

Gravenhurst, Ontario, Tuesday, January 26, 2010 - On Monday, January 25, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. staff confiscated drugs from a visitor after a routine search. The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) seized 49 oxycontin tablets, 8.5 grams of a rock like substance, 1.8 grams of marijuana and 1.3 grams of tobacco. The estimated institutional value of this seizure is $10,000. A further search of the visitor's vehicle produced additional drug paraphernalia.

The Ontario Provincial Police have been contacted and charges have been laid against the visitor.

CSC has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as searches of offenders, searches of visitors, use of ion scanners, use of drug dogs and searches of buildings and cells.

The staff and management at Fenbrook Institution wish to remind citizens that there is a toll-free telephone line, 1-866-780-3784 or (705)687-1999, for reporting any pressure to which a visitor may be subjected by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loan sharking. Such information is treated with confidentiality, and a security intelligence officer will provide follow-up.
