FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCKDOWN AND EXCEPTIONAL SEARCH AT KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

February 5, 2010, Kingston, Ontario - On February 3, 2010, at approximately 3:30 p.m., maintenance staff were completing a routine daily tool check and identified a missing exacto knife from a workshop area. In order to ensure the safety and security of the institution, the Warden initiated a lockdown of the institution to complete an exceptional search.

The exceptional search continues in order to recover the missing tool. To date, staff members have recovered a homemade weapon, tattoo paraphernalia, and brew making material. The institution remains secure.

The search will continue throughout the weekend or until all relevant areas have been thoroughly searched by our staff.

Visits are closed for the weekend, and visitors are advised to call ahead before attending the institution.

The safety and security of our institutions and the public is our primary objective. The institution will return to normal operations once the Warden determines it is safe to reopen.
