FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCKDOWN AND EXCEPTIONAL SEARCH AT KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

April 8, 2010, Kingston, Ontario – Kingston Penitentiary is currently locked down to facilitate an exceptional search for weapons and other contraband items. Acting on intelligence information, staff were able to locate and seize a homemade weapon that was manufactured from parts of a cell block lighting fixture. This lockdown is an example of staff taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of the institution.

The institution is quiet and secure at this time. Currently, visits are cancelled and visitors are asked to call for status before traveling to the institution.

The institution will return to normal operation once the Warden determines it is safe to do so. CSC works to ensure the safety of the public, staff and inmates.
