Kingston, Ontario, April 12, 2010 - Kingston Penitentiary will return to normal operations as of 1:00 p.m. today. The institution was locked down to conduct an exceptional search for weapons on April 8, 2010. During this search, staff seized a total of 18 sharpened weapons, constructed from a variety of materials obtained from broom handles, light fixtures and food carts. Brew making materials, tattoo equipment, as well as scraps of metal, were also recovered during this search.
The institution remains quiet and secure. The visiting schedule has been reinstated.
The safety and security of the institution is our primary objective. This exceptional search was a proactive measure to maintain a safe environment within the institution. No injuries to staff or inmates were sustained as a result of this action.
